Inspired by Jean Paul Sartre's homonymous play, No Exit takes place in a single location, in real time, with all improvisers on stage throughout the entire show. There are no cuts, no edits, and nowhere to escape from.

The format encourages a dramatic, emotionally charged style of improvisational play that explores the complexities of life and the inevitability of certain situations. The narrative will be filled with a variety of moments, from high tension, where characters cannot escape their circumstances or the other characters around them, to tenderness, where you can see the birth of solidarity and support in front of the audience. There will also be levity, to break the tension in key moments.

The uniqueness of this show attracts both the public and the actors, because there is a theatrical build up of the action, a truthful creation of the characters, a surprising unfolding of the themes.

Expect comedy, tragedy, tensions and revelations, all portrayed as seamlessly and honestly as the characters on stage explore the relationship to their situation and to each other.

In order to be considered for this module, please send an application to info@improbubble.com outlining your impro experience (we recommend 2 years of prior experience, including stage time).

What you’ll experience

  • A professional approach to working on and rehearsing for a format

  • Personal feedback

  • The nuts and bolts of putting a show together from every aspect (including production, which is a mandatory module component)

  • How to work well with a group of improvisers when you are not a troupe

  • Work on the specific improv skills, needed for the format, in particular: a focus on sustaining energy and commitment, creating moments of silence with impact, strenghening character arcs, recognizing comedic beats in dramatic tension

Who this is for

This is one of our Academy classes. These courses are intended for ambitious and advanced improvisers who already have at least 2-3 years of impro experience (including performance experience) who want to level up and work at a professional or semi-professional level.

There will be an audition and application process to select the participants for this course. Successful applicants will also be considered for future ImproBubble productions with our professional troupes.

Feedback will be an essential component of this course, as will a personal commitment from each individual to attend a production training as well as to take personal responsibility in the promotion of this show. The participants’ presence at each class is a requirement; it will be up to the discretion of the director whether they get to perform if there are absences.
