Improvisation is about telling a story together.

On stage, a scene unfolds, and sometimes it lacks a key element: a revealing character, a crucial piece of information, a clear relationship, a place.  When we are offstage, confortably sitting on the bench, we analyse every element present, or missing in the story.  We are like "Bench Geniuses" intensely using our improviser's brain trying to quickly find the contribution that will refine or enrich the scene in progress. But bringing helpful support is as stimulating as it is challenging: it requires active listening, sense of timing, story-writing skills, and ability to stage our idea. In this workshop, we will experiment support, break down its differents functions and forms and discover how wonderful it is when we can bring a helpful support to our partners, and to the scene. Together, we will discover and make use of our "Bench geniuses'" superpowers!

What you’ll learn

  • How to identify what a scene truly needs in the moment: information, character, relationship, context, or escalation

  • How to support effectively from offstage, using timing, clarity, and intention

  • How to transform an idea into a strong on-stage contribution that serves the story and your partners

  • How to develop your “Bench Genius” skills: active listening, narrative awareness, and collective storytelling

Who this is for

This is one of our Bubbles. These courses are intended for improvisers who already have an understanding of the basics, perhaps (but not necessarily) through our own Starting Steps courses and then have taken some other basic intermediate courses too, to have strong foundational skills. If you’re wondering which course is right for you, then feel free to email us.

This particular course is suitable for intermediate and advanced improvisers.

About the teacher

Peggy Pexy Green

Peggy is the Artistic Director of La compagnie qui pétille, based in Brussels, in which she has been creating and performing various original improv shows, like “The impossible to live with” with Joe Bill, "Secret Garden" with Mark Jane, “Mother and Daughter” and "Sensations". She also creates shows addressing society issues, like 'Rouge' on gender issues with a women-only cast, and ‘Freaks’ on the perception of differences and clichés, as she is strongly committed to human rights and equity in her life and in improv. In 2022, she published a “Guide for improvisers who want to change the world”, that can be downloaded on the website of La compagnie qui pétille (in French).

She is also part of ImproBubble, performing Musicals and Genre improvised plays, like “Matrioshka” (Chekhov) and Scenes from a marriage (Bergman).

And she loves teaching improv, traveling from Brussels to Barcelona, Paris, Toulouse, Lyon, Rabat, Luxembourg, Nice...

And… She is a Cat Person.
