In this course, we will work on integrating songs into longform improv structures.  We will take 2 approaches: discuss song types and structures to find out where and how they fit into a performance; but also a couple of (musical) long form formats to learn how and which songs enhance the format.

Finally, we will pick or develop a format ourselves and showcase it.

This course is perfect for those who have both a basis in improvised singing and scenic long form improv.

What you’ll learn

  • Explore song types and structures

  • Create a brand new musical improv format

  • Play in a showcase at an upcoming improv jam

Who this is for

This is one of our Bubbles. These courses are intended for improvisers who already have an understanding of the basics, perhaps (but not necessarily) through our own Starting Steps courses and then have taken some other basic intermediate courses too, to have strong foundational skills. If you’re wondering which course is right for you, then feel free to email us.

This particular course is suitable for intermediate and advanced improvisers.

About the teacher

Tom Tollenaere

Tom Tollenaere got introduced to improv in 1997 and was instantly hooked.

Tom is founder and artistic director of  RIOT – the Royal Improphonic Orchestra & Theatre, specializing in musical long-form improv theatre, and now celebrating its 13th year.  Prior to that, between 1999 and 2005 he was artistic director for The Lunatics, one of Belgium’s oldest  short-form collectives. He also performed with them as an improv actor from 1997 until 2006.

Tom has been training and coaching improvisers since 1999.   He likes to teach and theorize about Narrative long-form and musical improv, both long & short.

As an improv musician Tom can sometimes be seen outside of his home country Belgium, at festivals in Europe and North America.  He loves to travel to teach. Or to showcase his solo performance “Cookbook”.
